About this course

Why do you think so? Every day people give reasons - friends, adverts, teachers, headlines - and every day some of those reasons are good and some only sound good. This course is about telling them apart. It is for anyone, with no maths and no symbols. Short lessons start with what a reason is, then take an argument apart into its reasons and its conclusion, ask whether a conclusion must be true or only might be, look at "if", "all" and "some", learn from examples without jumping too far, and end with the tricks that fool us most - attacking the person, "everyone does it", only two choices, the straw man - and how to think well together with someone who disagrees. You need only a notebook and the talk around you.
