Points, lines and angles, flat and solid shapes, perimeter, area and volume, circles and pi, symmetry and grids - shown with paper, string and pictures.
Why is a wheel round, and why does a bicycle frame use triangles? This course is about shapes and the space they take up. You will measure turns in degrees, find out why the three corners of any triangle make a straight line, and sort shapes into families. You will walk round a shape to find its perimeter and count squares to find its area, then cut shapes apart and slide the pieces to find the area of a parallelogram, a triangle and a circle. You will see the squares on a right triangle fit together, meet a length that no fraction can name, and measure pi with a can and a piece of string. Then you will unfold boxes, fill them with cubes, find mirror lines, slide, turn and flip shapes, enlarge them to scale and find places on a grid. Every idea is shown first with things you can hold, and no letters stand for numbers.
