Out of a hundred

25% means 25 out of every 100. 100% is the whole, 50% half and 10% a tenth, 10% of 60 is 6, and because every percent counts out of the same hundred, percents are easy to compare.

About this video

Percent means out of a hundred: the word comes from the Latin per centum, "for each hundred". 25% means 25 out of every 100, the fraction 25/100. This short animation lights up 25 squares of a grid of 100, so you can see exactly how much 25% is: a quarter of the grid.

A few percents are worth knowing by heart. 100% is the whole thing, 50% is half, 25% is a quarter and 10% is a tenth. That makes some percents easy to work out: 10% of 60 is a tenth of 60, which is 6, and 50% of 60 is half of it, 30. Percents are also the easiest way to compare amounts that come out of different totals. Is 18 right answers out of 25 better than 34 out of 50? It's hard to say as they are. As percents it's plain: 18 out of 25 is 72%, and 34 out of 50 is 68%, so the first score is better. Every percent counts out of the same hundred.
