Learning path
In the order the concepts build on each other.
- FractionsLockedA fraction names part of a whole cut into equal parts: in 3/4 the bottom number says the whole is cut into 4 equal parts, and the top number that you have 3 of them. Fractions have their own places on the number line, some are more than one, and every fraction is a division.Opens after: Division, The number line
- DecimalsLockedPlace value carries on to the right of the ones: tenths, then hundredths, each ten times smaller. A decimal point marks where the ones end, so 2.7 is 2 ones and 7 tenths. 0.5 is a half and 0.25 a quarter. Decimals are compared place by place from the left.Opens after: Place value, Fractions
- Equivalent fractionsLockedDifferent fractions can be the same amount: 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8. Multiplying the top and bottom by the same number gives an equivalent fraction. With the same top number, a bigger bottom number means smaller parts, so 1/3 is less than 1/2.Opens after: Fractions
- PercentagesLockedPercent means out of a hundred: 25% is 25 out of every 100, the fraction 25/100. 100% is the whole, 50% half, 25% a quarter and 10% a tenth. Because every percent counts out of the same hundred, percents make amounts easy to compare.Opens after: Decimals
