One team
You run for a bus and dozens of body parts work at once. How cells build tissues, organs and organ systems, six of the eleven systems, and why none of them can work alone.
About this video
You run for a bus. Your legs push, your heart thumps faster, you breathe hard, and your eyes and brain keep you from tripping over the kerb. Dozens of body parts work at the same moment. This video shows how a body organises all that work.
Every living body is built from cells. Cells of the same kind group into tissues, such as muscle tissue, and two or more kinds of tissue make an organ, such as the heart or the stomach. An organ system is a group of organs that work together on one big job. Human anatomy books usually count eleven organ systems. Six of them are the digestive system, which breaks food down; the circulatory system, which carries blood everywhere; the respiratory system, which brings in oxygen and gets rid of carbon dioxide; the nervous system, which senses, decides and sends orders; the skeletal system, which holds you up; and the muscular system, which moves you. The others are the skin, the hormone system, the lymphatic system, the urinary system and the reproductive system.
No system can work alone. On the run for the bus, the lungs take in oxygen, the gut takes in sugars from food, the blood carries both to the leg muscles, and the nervous system tells the heart to beat faster. The systems also work together to keep the inside of the body steady, near 37 °C in snow or in summer sun: the skin sweats to cool you, and the kidneys keep water in when you haven't drunk. This video goes with the lesson Your Body's Systems in Biology Level 1 on Knaph.
This video shows depth 1 of Organ systems.
