Six, twelve, eight

A flat square given a height becomes a solid shape. Meet the seven solids by name, then count a box's 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices, and a pyramid's 5, 8 and 5.

About this video

A square drawn on paper has a length and a width, and nothing more. Give it a height and it takes up space: it becomes a solid shape. This animation starts there, then names the seven main solids one by one: the cube (six equal squares, like a dice), the cuboid (six rectangles, like a cereal box), the prism (the same shape all the way through), the pyramid (triangles meeting at a point), the cylinder (two flat circles and a curved side), the cone (one circle and a curved side that comes to a point) and the sphere (perfectly round).

Then it counts the three kinds of parts of a box. A face is a flat surface, and a box has 6. An edge is a line where two faces meet: 4 round the top, 4 round the bottom and 4 going up, 12 in all, with the ones at the back dashed. A vertex is a corner where edges meet: 4 at the top and 4 at the bottom make 8. The same rule - top, bottom, then what joins them - counts a pyramid with a square bottom: 5 faces, 8 edges and 5 vertices. Last come the curved solids: a cylinder rolls because its side is curved, and a sphere is one curved surface with no edges or vertices at all. This video goes with the Solid Shapes lesson of Geometry Level 1 on Knaph.

  1. 0:00A box, a tin, a ball. You can hold them and turn them. What are they?
  2. 0:06A square is flat. It has a length and a width.
  3. 0:11Give it a height and it takes up space. That's a solid shape.
  4. 0:16Seven have names. A cube is six equal squares.
  5. 0:19A cuboid is six rectangles, like a cereal box.
  6. 0:23A prism is one shape all the way through.
  7. 0:26A pyramid has triangles meeting at a point.
  8. 0:29A cylinder has two circles and a curved side.
  9. 0:33A cone has one circle and a point.
  10. 0:36And a sphere is perfectly round, like a ball.
  11. 0:40A face is one flat surface. Count them on a box. Top, bottom, front, back, and the two sides.
  12. 0:51A box has six faces.
  13. 0:56An edge is where two faces meet. Four round the top, four round the bottom, and four going up.
  14. 1:07Twelve edges.
  15. 1:12A vertex is a corner, where edges meet. Four at the top, four at the bottom.
  16. 1:20Eight vertices.
  17. 1:24A rule helps. Top, bottom, then what joins them.
  18. 1:28A pyramid has a square bottom and four triangles. Five faces.
  19. 1:32Four edges round the bottom, four going up. Eight.
  20. 1:36Four corners at the bottom, and the point. Five.
  21. 1:40Some solids are curved. A cylinder's side is curved, so it rolls.
  22. 1:46A sphere is one curved surface. No edges, no vertices at all.
  23. 1:52Count the faces, edges and vertices, and you can tell solids apart.
