Further right
Of two numbers, the one further right on the number line is greater. The sign's wide side faces the bigger number; more digits means bigger; with as many digits, compare from the left.
About this video
Which is bigger, 4 or 7? Put them on the number line and you can see it: 7 is further to the right, and further right always means greater. This short animation shows that, then shows how we write it. 7 > 4 says "seven is greater than four", and 4 < 7 says "four is less than seven". Either way, the wide, open side of the sign faces the bigger number.
Big numbers are compared without drawing a line. If one number has more digits than the other, it is bigger: 1,002 has four digits and 989 only three, so 1,002 is greater, even though 9 is bigger than 1. If both numbers have as many digits, compare them place by place from the left. In 4,512 and 4,521, the thousands are the same and so are the hundreds, but in the tens 2 beats 1, so 4,521 is greater. The ones don't matter any more. This video goes with the Bigger and Smaller lesson of Numbers Level 1 on Knaph.
